Every fall leaves drop down through the air and onto your manicured lawn. These small bits of tree do not have to be a nuisance any longer. They can save you money in the spring by making great, free mulch.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rake
  • Leaf Shredder
  • Lawn Mower
  1. Step 1

    Pile the leaves. The first step to take is to pile the leaves in one place using a rake. The leaves in the pile should be dry. Shredding wet leaves is not easy.

  2. Step 2

    Shred the leaves. One should then shred the leaves using a shredder or lawn mower. It is advisable to chop or shred leaves before making them into mulch.

  3. Step 3

    Add to a compost bin. The next step is to add the shredded leaves inside a compost bin. Layering should then be done in the compost bin. One should put the leaves in layers of 12-18 inches.

  4. Step 4

    Allow to sit for the winter. The leaves can sit in the compost bin for the rest of the winter. When spring time arrives, the leaves will them be ready to place around the trees and flowers as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Separating leaves by color can add to yard beauty.
  • Do not allow the leaves to get wet before storing. Wet leaves will mold.
