Step 1
Start by knowing that used motor oil is one of the biggest environmental pollutants. Even if it is recycled it takes energy to do so. Any way that you can cut down on changing your motor oil helps the environment. Is it possible to eliminate having to change your motor oil? It is with new synthetic motor oils that never break down and a bypass filter. I have used this system for four years on the same Jeep Wrangler which now has 130,000 miles on the odometer.
First let me say that I am not a dealer of any of the products mentioned in this article and there are no links in this article for my benefit or gain. -
Step 2
Try a bypass filter in conjunction with your regular oil filter. A company called Amsoil (not affiliated with Amway) offers a system that eliminates having to change your motor oil. The system utilizes a "bypass filter" which is installed underneath your vehicle near your regular oil filter. It filters out the microscopic debris and acids your regular filter misses. Using this system you do not drain your oil, ever. Ask you local mechanic if he will install a bypass filter system for you. There are other brands besides Amzoil. Search for "oil bypass filters" on the web.

Step 3
Keep an eye on your oil consumption and continue to change your disposable filter at the recommended interval. Once the bypass filter is installed you continue to check your oil and add oil when needed and change both the regular and bypass filter when recommended by your Amsoil dealer. Your synthetic oil stays as fresh as when you added it. The company offers an oil analyzing service you can use to see what shape the oil is in. Depending on your type of driving and environment the filters may need to be changed more often.
While the upfront cost of the filtration system is high, around $200, you will save money in the long run since you won't have to take time out of your schedule to visit an oil change center and you will not be paying for oil other than a quart every few thousand miles as you keep the level full.
It's a win-win product for you and the environment.
Currently the bypass filter system is only available from Amsoil dealers but copycat products are bound to follow as the benefits are more widely known.

on 7/12/2009 You environmentalists are annoying, I drain my used oil into the curb drain in front of my house every 3k miles. I'm sure it wont touch any endangered penguins. My car runs really well too, especially when I removed my catalytic converter, my turbo spools a good 100rpms faster.
