Train a Dog to Sit

Teaching a dog to sit: Teaching a dog to sit is relatively easy depending on the type of dog you have. Some dogs are more difficult to train than others.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • dog treat
  • dog
  1. Step 1

Get a treat. The dog's favorite treat would be the best.

  2. Step 2

Stand in front of your dog. Do not stand right up on his nose, but do not stand too far away. You should be able to touch the dogs head with an outstretched arm.

  3. Step 3

Tell him/her to sit (in a demanding tone) and raise the treat over the dog's head. Do NOT put the treat in front of the dog's face. The dog should actually be looking up at the treat (almost leaning backwards), not forward. The action of the dog looking up at the treat will cause the dog to instinctively sit.

  4. Step 4

Reapeat the action multiple times a day. The more excited you sound when the dog sits, the better. Your dog will learn how to sit in no time. (See sit tips below :) )

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice makes perfect!
  • If the dog starts getting bored or distracted you have been training for too long. Take a break and try again later.
