When booking a cruise you have the option of choosing the cabin you would like to stay in and with that option comes choices. Here are a few of those options to consider.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck plans.
  1. Step 1

Inside or outside? Inside will be less expensive but it will not have any natural sunlight so that's a consideration. Outside will have a porthole, window or even a balcony. Check between the porthole or window as the size will make a big difference. Also, see if something might block your view like a lifeboat. Check the deck plan of the ship to choose the cabin that is right for you. Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean Cruises, Celebrity Cruise Lines and Carnival Cruise Lines have deck plans available.

  2. Step 2

What deck to choose? The lower locations tend to be more stable, but you are often further from the decks with activities - which will require more time in elevators or on the stairs. Also, the middle of the ship will be more stable than cabins at either end. Look where the dining rooms are, most cruise lines want them to be in a stable location.

  3. Step 3

Which side of the ship? Although most people don't consider this, if you are going with an outside cabin and your cruise will follow the land you might want to be on the side that looks at it the most.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that an average cabin on a ship is smaller than a typical hotel room so that porthole or window can make a difference.
  • Check the deck plan of the ship carefully when choosing a room. Being near an elevator can be convenient but if you are too close listening to those waiting for it late at night can be a distraction.
  • If you are planning to spend a limited amount of time in your room the cost savings for an inside cabin may be well worth it.
