How to Create a Vector Christmas Stocking in Illustrator

During the holiday season, vector illustrations can be very useful, especially for Christmas cards, invitations, home decor and gifts. One of the most simple icons to learn how to make is the Christmas stocking. Along with the icon of Santa Claus and a Christmas tree, it is widely and immediately recognizable. In a few minutes, you can have your own vector Christmas stocking that you can put on all of your cards or social networking site pages.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with your rounded rectangle shape. Make it red with no outline.

    • 2

Drag out an oval with your circle tool in the same color as the rectangle. Draw your circle to the bottom of the stocking to give it that stocking shape.

    • 3

With the rounded rectangle shape, choose a white fill and gray outline. Make a rectangle shape for the top of the stocking. Make the stroke for this shape thicker than 1, at least a 3. You now have your basic stocking.

    • 4

For more Christmas character, you can make a variety of designs. For this tutorial, a green argyle-inspired design is easy to learn. Create one green square with your square tool. Now copy and paste the square and make that copy smaller. Copy and paste that smaller square so that you now have two small squares the same size. Place all of the squares as shown in the example image and your stocking is ready to be filled with goodies.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can type the name of someone special in the white space of the stocking for an even more custom look.
