Use Grapeseed Oil

What the heck do you use grapeseed oil for anyway? Well, it can be used in place of just about any oil! It has such a light clean flavor and high smoke point that this oil is very versatile when cooking. I first really heard about grapeseed oil when a friend told me about making popcorn using grapeseed oil and nutritional yeast in place of butter and cheese. Let's start with that simple recipe as it will introduce you to the flavor of grapeseed oil.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A bottle of grapeseed oil (also known as grape seed oil) Can be found in health food stores
  • below items are optional
  • popcorn kernels
  • air popper popcorn maker
  • nutritional yeast
  • salt
  1. Step 1

To make grapeseed oil and nutritional yeast popcorn air pop the popcorn in your air popper according to the manufacturers directions. In a large bowl toss the popcorn with a generous amount of the oil and nutritional yeast. Also toss in a little salt. Give the finished popcorn a taste, add more oil, yeast or salt to taste. See how light grapeseed oil tastes? ..Also, in case you were wondering..nutritional yeast is used by many vegetarians and vegans in place of cheese due to it's creamy texture. It's healthy and delicious, give it a try! Nutritional yeast can be found in the bulk "help yourself" area of your local health food store/healthy supermarket.

  2. Step 2

Try using grapeseed oil in place of other oils in your favorite stir fry recipes. Be creative! Grapeseed oil is pretty good for you as far as oils go, it is high in vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids. This oil works well in recipes for salad dressings, marinades and for grilling vegetables too.

  3. Step 3

If you really want to get adventurous try sauteing chestnuts in grapeseed oil. For more info on how to do this see my related article 'How to Roast Chestnuts on an Open Fire'.

Tips & Warnings
  • Grapeseed oil is supposed to be good for the skin too. Try rubbing some on stubborn dry patches of skin or as a cuticle oil.
  • This oil is also found in cosmetics and massage oil.
