Stop Arguing Over Money

Arguing over money is the number one problem most couples face. Tips on how to stop arguing over money.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fighting over money can make you feel horrible. In every relationship there is normally a "save" and a "spender" and disagreements are bound to occur. This doesn't mean that your marriage is doomed or that something is seriously wrong. Agree to acknowledge each others differences and discuss money problems calmly is key to overcoming money arguments.

  2. Step 2

    Schedule a Monthly Money Talk
This isn't going to be fun but it's necessary and both of you will know whats going on. With both of you informed about expenses, debt, and savings and agreeing on a plan for all, there will be less money arguments. This money talk will take the burden off the bill payer and keep the non-bill payer up to date.

    Things to discuss:

    * Debt - How much you have and how you are going to pay it off and how much you have paid off recently. Get out all the bills and go over them.

    * Savings - How much is in your account and how much you plan on contributing too build it up.

    * Spending - Set up a spending budget, both of you should have input here so there are no surprises.

    * Big ticket items - Prepare for upcoming big ticket items, like new tires, new refrigerator, house maintenance. Keep each other informed so there are no surprises.

    * Set financial goals - Where do you want to be this time next year?

  3. Step 3

Lay Down Some Ground Rules - Here's some examples but make your own that work for the both of you.

    * Neither can spend $100 without consulting the other.
    * Don't involve outsiders - keep money issues between the two of you.
    * Set up an allowance for each person to spend however they want without accountability.
