How to Understand Your Pregnant Wife

Here's a little help in understanding what your wife is going through at this time in her life.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Your wife's hormones are changing. She may be really tired even early on in the pregnency. You need to let her rest if she needs to and not demand that she keep up the pace she had before she was pregnant. This is best for her and the baby. Stress is not good on a new mommy.

  2. Step 2

Just because she's a woman, don't assume that pregnancy will be easy or enjoyable for her. If something was growing inside your belly you might be a little uncomfortable too.

  3. Step 3

Let her get emotional and don't expect her to be 100% all the time. Be understanding if she gets insecure about her looks or attractiveness to you. Realize that the prospect of a painful birth experience can be somewhat scary. After all, who really knows how everything is going to go? This can be a time of uncertainty. Try to be as reassuring as possible.

  4. Step 4

Realize that pregnancy is somewhat confining and sometimes frustrating as she often can't do what she would like to do. She cannot do many sports, take a hot bath or go in hot tubs to relax, sleep on her belly, eat some of the things she would like to, etc.

  5. Step 5

Later in the pregnancy the weight may slow down her ability to walk and move like she used to. Joints loosen and may be painful at times and make her more unsteady. Painful leg cramps may awaken her in the middle of the night. Pregnancy is work.

  6. Step 6

Having a child is a partnership. It took two to tango and she needs your love and support more than ever as you go through this precious time together. Be her advocate, friend, and partner; not her adversary. Help her feel like you are both in this thing together. Be respectful, understanding, and supportive. Do what you can to ease her burdens, to create happy memories, and to have a healthy and safe pregnancy.
