Ask Your Vet The Right Questions About Your Pet

When your pet is sick, or you just need answers, knowing how to ask the right questions for your situation is key.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stamina--not all vets are created equal!
  1. Step 1

The first thing is do when you need answers from your vet is to listen to what they have to say. Let them tell you all they know but don't stop there. If you don't understand something they say, ask them to say it differently. Often we don't understand something, and wish we'd asked what was meant. This is your opportunity.

  2. Step 2

Once your vet has told you their opinion, ask them questions. Are the options they have given the only options? Or, are they the only options available at their clinic. There is a difference. Ask about different medications. What are the side effects? Are there drug interactions? Are there alternative medication choices?

  3. Step 3

Make certain you understand what each medication is for. Ask if they are absolutely necessary? Are there preventative steps to take, or alternatives to medication or diagnostics? Again, are these the only options available or just available at their clinic today?

  4. Step 4

Ask about second opinions and specialists. Are there safer ways to go?

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions after you've left and had time to absorb what is being said.
  • If your vet won't or can't answer a question, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion.
  • Don't discount or dismiss what your vet has said because you don't like the answer.
  • Don't be bullied or rushed into a decision.
  • Do your own research, but remember that the vet is the professional with years of experience.
