While shareware might be a free way to download cool programs, it often comes bundled with spyware and key loggers. Spyware is dangerous malware that can collect personal information about you from your computer without your permission. Key loggers can log each keystroke and take screen shots to track everything that you do on your computer. Parents or administrators sometimes use key loggers. They can also be malicious programs used by hackers to steal your information. Learn how to remove harmful spyware and key loggers programs before they do any damage. Follow these helpful tips.

From Quick Guide: Spyware Removal 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your currently installed programs list. Because spyware and key loggers are software and not viruses, they will frequently show up there. In your "Control Panel" go to "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall any programs you are sure that you do not need.

  2. Step 2

Delete your browsing history. Open Internet Explorer and click "Tools." Choose "Internet Options" and click the "Delete" button in the "Browsing History" section. Choose "Delete All," unless you want Internet Explorer to remember your passwords. If so, click each button individually except for "Delete Passwords."

  3. Step 3

Start your computer in "Safe Mode." To do so, turn the machine completely off. Turn it back on and immediately begin tapping the F8 key repeatedly until you see the "Safe Mode" option. This will allow your computer to run without background programs, including spyware, running in the background. This makes it easier to remove these programs.

  4. Step 4

Run your anti-spyware program while you are in "Safe Mode." If you do not have an anti-spyware program, download one before starting in "Safe Mode." Check the Resource section below for some reputable, free options.

  5. Step 5

Restore your computer to a time before it was infected. On the Start menu, point to "Programs" or "All Programs." Point to "Accessories" and then "System Tools." Click System Restore" and follow the wizard instructions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Run your anti-spyware program at least once a month, if not more. Use a firewall to help block unwanted programs.
  • Do not download shareware or other programs from an unfamiliar source.
