How to Start a Clothing Line Business

There is a lot to consider when starting a clothing line. You need more than just a look and an aesthetic in order to be successful. Most designers start out on their own, providing the labor, design, marketing and even the financing. As your clothing line business grows, you may hire out production, shipping or other tasks to free up more of your own time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about your possible clothing line. Presumably, you have the basic skills required in order to create clothing. This could be silkscreening expertise for a t-shirt line or couture sewing for formal wear. You should have an overall vision of what you want to make and what it will add to the market before you consider creating your own clothing line business.

  2. Step 2

Make a business plan. Even if you are not seeking outside financing, this step will help to keep you on track toward your goals. You may want a more formal plan to share with others, or something less set in stone for your own use. Your plan should include financial expenses and financial goals, marketing plans, and an overall business concept. The process of writing a plan is especially useful in terms of allowing you to define your own goals. Set aside time in the coming months to review and revise your plan if appropriate.

  3. Step 3

Find or create a workspace. Many people begin working on their clothing lines in their own homes. Make sure you have space to create and package your designs. A well-organized work area will help with all aspects of fulfilling an order and creating your clothing. For tax purposes, keep supplies used for business and personal use separate. Be sure that all required equipment is in good working order.

  4. Step 4

Market yourself and sell your work. You will need samples of your work, and if selling online, quality photographs. Be sure that any photos accurately show your clothing, and consider bartering with a local photographer if appropriate. You can sell your clothing line in local shops, at craft fairs, and via online marketplaces like Etsy. When pricing your work, be sure to allow for materials, expenses and a reasonable hourly salary for your own time.

  5. Step 5

Evaluate how your clothing line business is growing. You may choose to keep your business small, producing only as much as you are able to handle on your own. You might also want to consider hiring sewing staff or others to assist in packaging and production. Keep careful financial records, both for the IRS and your own sake. While starting a clothing line business can be costly initially, you should see profits increasing and be able to pay yourself accordingly over time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Starting small is a good beginning. With minimal investment, you can begin selling a few items online.
  • Avoid allowing quality to suffer. Your business will not thrive if you produce a poor quality product. Be sure that your designs and patterns are your own and do not violate copyright laws.
