Want to use a 'box' hair color to color your hair? Did you know that what you see is not always what you get especially when using this kind of hair color. UNLESS you can understand the law of color. Just because the model on the box has pretty blonde hair does not mean that you will get the same unless you understand the law of color. Here's your quick-study:

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

First thing first.. natural dark hair. You may not be a platinum blonde without damaging your hair. Okay.
Take note, red cancels green. Green cancels red. Orange cancels blue. Blue cancels orange. Violet cancels yellow. Yellow cancels violet.

  2. Step 2

If you want to add nice golden highlights to dark brown hair or change all the hair golden, you will need to cancel orange. When lightening dark brown hair, the orange will be prominent unless it's cancelled. Look for hair color that's based with blue or add a drop of blue color to your mixture.

  3. Step 3

Going blonde but the finished product has a yellow tinge to it, tone over it with violet. Violet will cancel the yellow tinge and if done properly it will look platinum. As a general rule, I would suggest any stylist or anyone to keep Redkens Shades EQ color O9V(platinum ice) on hand. This is the cure-all for those who love platinum without yellow. Be careful, using too much could cause the hair to look silver.

  4. Step 4

When you color your hair, does the outcome look green or ashy? If so, try to find a color that's based with red, or add a drop of red to your color. Especially those who loves browns or black. Some black hair colors have a cast of green when under a light, this can be easily cured by using blacks based neutral or with red. Stay away from those based with ash, that's green!

  5. Step 5

Study the first step and over time the law of color will be clearer. It seems difficult, but it's really easy.
