  • Paper
  1. Step 1

It is a good idea to review "How to write Japanese Katakana" from Part 1 to Part 4 first. The links are shown in the end of this article. It is especially good idea to review how to pronounce five vowels (in "How to write Japanese Katakana (Part 1)".

  2. Step 2
    Katakana (Part 5)
    Katakana (Part 5)

Open the graphic (if it is blurry, you may either want to open it in a new window or you may save the graphic in your computer and open it). The blue lines show the stroke orders. The first five letters start with "r". ラ is "ra", リ is "ri", ル is "ru", レ is "re" and ロ is "ro". However, Japanese "r" sound does not like the one in English. It is much closer to "L" sound. But instead of pushing the tip of the tongue on the back of the top front teeth, the sound will be made by the tip of the tongue lightly touched on the back of the top front teeth and then flickered. To pronounce ラリルレロ, try to say "L" sound but the tongue is positioned as that of "D" sound.

  3. Step 3

The next letter is ワ ("wa") as in "war". ヲ is pronounced as "wo" if it stands alone. However, in the sentence it is pronounced as "o". ン is "n". To pronounce "n", close your mouth and your tongue rest at the normal position and make a sound nasally from your nose.
