How to Make a Checklist for Hiring a Babysitter

Whether you are searching for a full time babysitter or a babysitter for an evening out it can be stressful. Having a plan and a list of your expectations and requirements will make the process easier. Conduct the process as you would a job interview. This list will focus on the full time babysitter.

  1. Step 1

    Inquire with friends, family and neighbors for suggestions. If there are no suggestions then you can post an ad online or in a local newspaper. Decide before your search if your child will be kept in your home or another persons home.

  2. Step 2

    Make an application form. This can be hand written as you ask the questions or typed using a document program. Include the following questions: Applicants name, address, phone number. List 3 references who are not related include the name, address, phone number and relation. Previous experience with children and previous job history.

  3. Step 3

    Decide if you will be claiming these expenses on your income taxes. If you decide to claim them you will need the Babysitters Social security number. You should request copies of the following: Social security card, Drivers license and drivers record(from DMV), State Criminal history and any certifications in CPR/First Aid. You can also check online for the sex offender registry once you have their information.

  4. Step 4

    Introduce your child to the Babysitter while you will be staying with them. Observe how your child and the Babysitter interact. Clarify any information on suggested activities, restricted activities, food allergies etc.

  5. Step 5

    If your child is staying in their home check for age appropiate toys. Is there home child proof? Ask what the schedule for the day is. If there isnt any, suggest the appropiate meal times and nap times for your child.

  6. Step 6

    Things to pack when your child is staying in their home.
    An extra set of clothes, diapers, formula/food, wipes, sunscreen, bug repellant and toys if needed.
    Ensure for nap time there are appropiate sleeping arrangements.
    Always make sure the Babysitter has an updated phone list of how to contact you and a back-up in case you are unavailable.

  • Contact the local Police, State police or DMV prior to the interview to find out specific instructions to complete the above forms.
