When buying carpet there are many different fibers to choose from and it can be confusing. This eHow breaks down the general information on each of the most common fibers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Nylon is the most commonly used carpet fiber. This is because its is very durable, and reasonably priced. It has the ability to be dyed just about any color and can be made into many different styles and textures. Nylon is the most highly recommended fiber.

  2. Step 2

Pet Polyester or Polyethylene Terephthalate is a polyester fiber with natural and permanent stain resistance. This carpet is very durable.

  3. Step 3

OLEFIN or Polypropylene is the easiest to dye. You will usually see this as indoor outdoor carpet. It is the most stain resistant but has a typical lifespan of 3 months.

  4. Step 4

Wool is berber carpet, plush carpet, and frieze carpet. Wool resists soils, crushing, and most stains. Wool is also fire resistant. Wool is long lasting, but expensive.

  5. Step 5

Acrylic has a lot of the characteristics of wool, but with a tendency to fuzz and pill. It is not recommended as it does not look good for long.

  6. Step 6

Cotton is commonly used in rugs. This is because this long wear fiber does not stand well for long and is not easy to clean.

  7. Step 7

Rayon is also commonly used in rugs. It has a low melting point and is hard to dye. It does not stand well to high traffic so it is best left to be seen, not used.
