How to Tie a Tie

There are a couple of ways to tie a tie. This way is called the windsor knot. It is probably the most popular way to tie a tie. It looks very nice and professional. Every guy should know how to tie a tie.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tie
  • Knowledge
  1. Step 1

    To tie the Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow these steps. Put tie around neck. Pull long side of tie to the left and the smaller part of the tie to the right. The long side will be referenced as "W" for wide end, the smaller part will be referenced as "N" narrow end.

  2. Step 2

    The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".

  3. Step 3

    Bring the wide end "W" up through the loop between the collar and your tie; then back down.

  4. Step 4

    Pull the wide end "W" underneath the narrow end "N" and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end "W" is inside out.

  5. Step 5

    Bring the wide end "W" across the front from right to left.

  6. Step 6

    Pull the wide end "W" up through the loop again.

  7. Step 7

    Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.

  8. Step 8

    Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar. Simply keep practicing the Windsor Knot a few more times until you can tie this necktie knot within less than 30 seconds.
