Photos and images make a great addition to your blog entry, eHow article, website, PowerPoint presentation - you name it! But where can you find free photos on the web that are free to use? There's many websites that offer stock photographs and images - for a fee. But if paying for photos on the web isn't in your budget, support a budding photographer or artist and post their photos free of charge!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Computer
  • An Internet Connection
  • A Use for Free Stock Photos on the Web!
  1. Step 1

DETERMINE WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPH YOU'RE LOOKING FOR: The first step to finding a free photograph on the web is to decide what you're looking for! Before you start your search for stock photos on the web, think of a few keywords that describe the photo you're seeking.

  2. Step 2

VISIT STOCK.XCHNG: STOCK.XCHNG (www.sxc.hu)is among the best websites to find low-cost and free stock photographs on the web. In order to use Stock.Xchng, you will have to register and sign-up with the site for free. Search for photos using keywords that describe the stock photo you're seeking and Stock.Xchng will bring back a few pay-per-download results, called "Stock Xpert" photos, along with quite a few photos that are available for free download. Download free photos on Stock.Xchng, but be sure to note any restrictions concerning usage. Some Stock.Xchng photographers require credits for their photos, while others require advance notification when using their photographs for public work. Generally speaking, some of the highest quality free photographs can be found on Stock.Xchng.

  3. Step 3

VISIT MORGUEFILE: Morguefile.com is similar to Stock.Xchng, except all the photos on the site can be downloaded for free. There is no sign-up or registration required to use the free photos on Morguefile. In general, the photos on Morguefile are of a bit lower quality than Stock.Xchng, but nevertheless, there are some beautiful images available for free download from Morguefile. If you have a blog, website or write articles for websites like eHow, bookmarking Morguefile is a must!

  4. Step 4

VISIT WIKIMEDIA COMMONS: Wikimedia Commons (Commons.Wikimedia.com) is a source of public domain photographs that are available for use on websites, blogs and in articles on sites like eHow. Like Morguefile, no registration or sign-up is required to download free photos or illustrations from Wikimedia Commons, which is an affiliate of the popular Wikipedia website. Of the three sites mentioned, Wikimedia Commons has the widest array of photographs. Morguefile and Stock.Xchng doe not typically have celebrity photos, for instance, while a vast array of free celebrity photos are available for download from Wikimedia Commons.

Tips & Warnings
  • When possible, credit the photographer!
  • Take a minute to send a link to the photographer if you download one of their free photos and use it on your web page, blog or in your article. Many of these photographers are in need of clips for their portfolios, while others simply enjoy seeing how their work is used.
  • Always note and adhere to any usage restrictions that are noted for a particular stock photo. The photos may be free to download, but there are often restrictions (i.e. the photographer must be notified before using the photo for any public work).
  • Never claim another person's work as your own! It's unethical and just plain wrong. These photographers may allow for the free download and free usage of their photos, but many retain full rights to their photography.
