Proper Shoelace
Proper Shoelace

As a runner I have always had problems with my shoelaces becoming untied during a run. I finally learned how to tie a proper knot, a reef knot, that will keep your shoelaces tied on those long runs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Here is how you do it:
Start with your standard laces and crossing the right lace over the left and tuck the left lace under and pull down. This is how we all start.
If you prefer to start with left over right you may do so (lefties) , but follow the same instructions as below but substitute left for right in each instance

  2. Step 2

Now make a loop with your right lace and with the left lace pull around the FRONT on the loop and push through the hole as normal.
For the lefties, you must still go in front, not back

  3. Step 3

The difference here is pulling around the front of the loop, it is a counter clockwise motion. This is a reef knot and will keep your laces tied for a long run.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all running shoelaces are created equal. Some companies have shoelaces that I cannot keep tied, or are too long. Try your local running shop for a shorter, flatter pair that may help you keep your laces tied. Do not be scared of replacement laces.
