With today's selection of high definition televisions, choosing an appropriate TV can become challenging without a little homework.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Proper transportation for shipment
  • Time for hookup and periphial components
  1. Step 1

First off, we need to decide if a plasma or LCD is the TV for you. Is the room you're putting the TV in bright? Plasma televisions have exceptional clarity but with high gloss screens are not a good choice for bright rooms. LCD televisions have a corrugated surface for very low reflection ratings. This is the most important choice for a satisfactory picture.

  2. Step 2

Next, what are your main uses for the TV. Games, movies, cable, any number of uses. For games, check for refresh rates. Also consider that plasma TV's can result in burn-in if an HUD display is on the games main screen. LCD's have no burn in. For movies, check for ports, i.e. HDMI, Svideo, ect. These need to match the players you will hook them up to. Today's cable is also different for each provider. Ask them what signals are available and match them to the TV.

  3. Step 3

Finally, after making your decision, make sure you have enough space in your vehicle to transport it home. An option would be home delivery, but companies are still charging as if gas were $4.00/gallon. I happen to work at an electronics retail store, and the main disappointment to customers is trying to pick up a TV and realizing that there isn't enough room for the TV. Other plans have to be made and generally result in a hustle to get it home.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the television you purchase has 1080P resolution.
  • Remember to match your components to your TV. Having to go back to find adapters is a headache no one needs.
  • Don't settle for customer service reps that don't know the answers to your questions. If they don't know, ask them to please find out. You really can't learn too much about the TV you're going to purchase
  • For the 'technically challenged', ask about the ease of user interface. Some televisions are extremely advanced and have options you might not need, or vice versa.

on 1/31/2009 Generic advice of limited value.

And don't waste your maoney on 1080p TVs with a screen size smaller than 40 inches (and even that size is questionable.
