There are many reasons why you may want to cut up a t-shirt, maybe you want to make it a certain style or maybe you just want to cut an old t-shirt to make cleaning rags to use. There are several different ways to cut up a t-shirt. If you already know why you want to cut one up then go ahead and look at the different ways to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First, make sure your cotton t-shirt has been washed and dried so that it's already done shrinking. Then determine which style or how you want to cut your t-shirt.

  2. Step 2

To cut for open V-neck style: Lay t-shirt on a flat surface. You may want to use a marker to draw an outline of a V on the center of the neck of the t-shirt. Determine how small or large and how wide you want the V neck to be. Once you've drawn an outline, then take your scissors and cut out the V shape on the neck.

  3. Step 3

To cut for open side slit style: Lay t-shirt on a flat surface. Again, you may want to use a marker to draw a straight line on each side of the t-shirt. Determine if you want just a small side split up each side of the t-shirt or a much larger one. Use the scissors and cut along the straight line, making sure to hold tension on the upper part of the t-shirt while cutting.

  4. Step 4

To cut for tank top style: Lay t-shirt on a flat surface. Begin by cutting off the sleeves of the t-shirt. You may want to cut directly after the arm stitching or on the other side of the arm stitching. If you cut the arm stitching out this will give a more tattered look, but more of a true tank top look as well. Decide if you want to cut out the neck and draw an outline around the entire neck of the t-shirt, cut as close to the stitching as possible.

  5. Step 5

To cut for belly shirt: Lay t-shirt on a flat surface. Begin by determining how short you want to cut off the shirt. You may want to hold the shirt up to your body to determine the proper length you wish to have. Draw a straight line across the body of the shirt and cut. If you want to make it a tank top belly shirt then cut off the neck and the arms, being careful to cut as close to the stitching as you can and holding the shirt tight to prevent slipping while cutting with the scissors.

  6. Step 6

To cut for use as cleaning rags: Lay t-shirt on a flat surface. Begin by chopping off the arms. You do not necessarily need to worry about cutting the shirt straight because you are just using it to clean your house and not to wear again. Next, cut up through each sides stitching of the t-shirt. Cut the neck out. Now you have two large pieces of cloth from the t-shirt. If you want smaller rags, then begin cutting t-shirt horizontally or cross ways, until you have several smaller rags for cleaning use.
