- Flat head screwdriver
- Furniture twine
- Utility knife
- Measuring tape

Turn the piece of furniture over and remove the fabric from the back of the chair by prying the staples lose from the frame itself with the flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to rip or damage the material.

Remove all the material and padding from the chair, using the flat head screwdriver again to remove any necessary staples. Do not discard any of the materials so that you may replace them when finished.

Locate the broken spring tie while making note of how the other zig zag springs are tied. In most cases there will be a definite pattern or technique used that will be visible and can serve as a guide.

Remove the broken tie by untying or simply cutting it away with the utility knife and removing any staples or tacks that may be attached.

Measure the length of one of the good ties and cut the furniture twine to match. It is a good rule of thumb here to add 6 to 8 inches to your measurement. If there is no intact tie to measure then measure across the frame and zig zag springs, from outside to outside and then add 6 to 8 inches.

Pound one upholstery tack in the wood on each end of the frame, leaving enough of the tack exposed so that you can tie the twine securely before you sink it completely. Be careful not to damage the springs or wood frame when tacking.

Tie one end of the twine to the tack using a slip knot and pound the tack in the rest of the way. Follow the same pattern as the ties that are intact. As you work your way across the zig zag springs, pull tight after each loop or run. Keep the twine as tight as you can until you reach the end and the tack.

Wrap the twine around the tack tightly and secure using a square knot. Then pound the tack in completely. Test the springs and tie by putting your weight on them and make sure there is not too much give.

Replace all the padding and materials that you have removed earlier and staple the upholstery fabric back in place by alternating side's one staple at a time working your way down.
