It is easy to sight in your scope and you do not need a fancy, expensive bore-sighter to do it. It can be done in about 10 minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shooting range
  • Bull's-eye target
  • Sandbag
  • Rifle scope
  • A dime
  1. Step 1

You can sight in your rifle at the local range. It would be a bit more difficult and much less safe to do this in your back yard or basement.

  2. Step 2

You must make sure your rifle is unloaded. Then remove the bolt. Place the rifle on the sandbag so that it is in an even, sturdy position.

  3. Step 3

Unscrew the elevation and windage caps on the scope. Now point the rifle at the target you have placed 25 yards downrange.

  4. Step 4

Shoulder the rifle as you would to fire it. Peer down the bore and sight it in on the bull's-eye.

  5. Step 5

You can now look up through the scope and see where the crosshairs land on the target. With the dime turn the elevation and windage dials until the crosshairs are in the middle of the bull's-eye as well as your sight through the bore. If both are lined up on the center of the bull's-eye you should be roughly on target. Now set up the target at 100 yards and fire the rifle to fine-tune the scope to your specifications. Don't forget to replace the protective caps to the windage and elevation knobs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the rifle is unloaded and that there is no one downrange of you when sighting in even if you are not firing. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
