Create Your Own Copper Garden Sign

A beautiful garden makes a statement and so does a classic copper garden sign that you made yourself. This is a great garden project because it is completely customizable. Perfect to add an extra personal touch and flair to your garden.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • • 8x11 piece of cardboard
  • • Pencil
  • • Scissors
  • • Letter stencils (optional)
  • • Wooden board
  • • Wood glue
  • • Medium-weight copper sheeting
  • • Duct tape
  • • Sandpaper
  • • Craft stick
  • • Wooden stake, at least 3 feet long
  • • Two 1 1/2-inch wood screws
  • Handsaw, Tacks or staple gun (optional), Drill, Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Choose your phrase and layout your stencils on the cardboard.

  2. Step 2

Use the scissors to cut out your letters and arrange them on the wood board. Leave about a quarter inch between each letter.

  3. Step 3

When the letters are arranged the way you want them, glue them down. Use small dabs of glue to hold the cardboard letters in place.

  4. Step 4

    Allow the glue to dry.

  5. Step 5

Cut a piece of copper sheeting that is at least six inches larger, on all sides, than your wood board.

  6. Step 6

Place your wood board, letter side down, onto the sheeting. Make sure to center it.

  7. Step 7

Loosely but snuggly bend the copper around the wood.

  8. Step 8

Attach the copper to the wood with your choice of duck tape, staples, or tacks.

  9. Step 9

Use your craft stick to rub around the letters. Make sure you get all the grooves and indentations. This will make the letters raise up off the surface.

  10. Step 10

Cut one of the ends of your stake at a diagonal. This will be the top and will tilt up the sign.

  11. Step 11

Attach the sign to the stake with wood screws. Use a flat surface and make sure to not screw through the metal.

  12. Step 12

Dig a hole about six inches deep and place your stake into it. Pack dirt firmly around the base and your sign is ready to go.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a cotton swab to wipe away any glue that bleeds out from around the letters.
  • Sand the edges of the craft stick to smooth out any rough areas that could tear the metal.
