Nowadays you have to show your birth certificate more and more if you want to get something like a new license, get a marriage certificate, passport etc. Unfortunately, most of us do not have a copy of our birth certificate and if you do its lost somewhere in the millions of papers we have.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone
  • Internet
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Go on the internet and find out how to get your birth certificate in the state where you were born. You may need to contact the county clerk, the hospital where you were born or the most popular... the states site for Vital Records through the department of human resources or public health. It is different in different states.

  2. Step 2

Once you have found the right location. You can either request your birth certificate online or your can call the location and talk to someone in person.

  3. Step 3

The internet site or representative will need certain information from you... your birth name on the certificate, birth parents names, a scanned copy of information like drivers license, ss # card etc.. The internet site or person on the phone will work with you in getting all the information they need for you to get your birth certificate.

  4. Step 4

You will pay anywhere from $10-30+ for your birth certificate, including shipping.

  5. Step 5

SHIPPING: Depending on the state, you will get your certificate within a certain number of days while in other states it may take several weeks. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get the certificate if you need it for something important.

  6. Step 6

When requesting your birth certificate ask for a duplicate. This will probably cost you a few extra dollars, but it will be worth the extra money because you will have another copy that you can place somewhere safe just in case your lose the first one.
