Unlock A Wii Console
Unlock A Wii Console

Unlocking your Wii so that you can play imported, backup and homebrew games is a challenging and dangerous business. Typically, you have to install a special device in your Wii, known as a "modchip," in order to unlock your Wii. Unfortunately, the process of opening your Wii and installing the chip will void your warranty. Fortunately, there is another way to unlock your Wii.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Wii console
  • A modchip or instructions to unlock your Wii using a sofware modification
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want to unlock your Wii with a Modchip or whether you want to do it without one. The safest method, of course, is to unlock your Wii without a Modchip. Consider using Wii unlock without a modchip.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the method you're using to unlock the Wii is compatible with your current System update. Trying to unlock your Wii with the wrong System update can lock your system.

  3. Step 3

Choose a way to unlock your Wii that won't impact the quality of your Wii's performance. Some methods, especially certain Modchips, will slow your Wii down considerably.

  4. Step 4

Look into WiiChipUnlock as a viable alternative to unlock your Wii without a dangerous Modchip. You want a safe and effective way to unlock your Wii, and WiiChipUnlock is one of the most effective.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unlocking your Wii will allow you to run software that's from other regions, as well as backup, homebrew or imported software.
  • If you run into trouble unlocking your Wii, if you're using a software unlock you should be able to remove the software and get Nintendo to repair the Wii.
  • Wait for an update from your Wii unlock provider before you update your console software.
  • Do not take your Wii to a shady business to "modify" your Wii. If something goes wrong, you won't be able to replace the Wii and you have no recourse.

This method of unlocking Wii is the ONLY soft mod that does not require you to use the Zelda game and IS compatible with all Wii's, including update 4.2!
