Remove a Whirlaway Garbage Disposal

Every now and then a garbage disposal will need to be replaced. It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally a solid object will get wedged inside the disposal's mechanisms and cause it to break. There are a few key factors in choosing the right garbage disposal replacement. Stainless steel parts mean no corrosion, and the disposal should have no less than a 1/2 horsepower motor. Whirlaway garbage disposals are one of the more popular brands. They come with stainless steel parts and have finely tuned motors. If you have a broken Whirlaway garbage disposal, read the following steps on how to remove it in order to install a replacement.

From Quick Guide: Garbage Disposal Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  1. Step 1

Twist off the lock-nut on the top of the disposal and the bottom of the drain pipe.

  2. Step 2

Wiggle the drain pipe so it loosens from inside the garbage disposal.

  3. Step 3

Insert a screwdriver into one of the metal flanges on the top of the disposal. Slowly unscrew the top clockwise. Because it is only a rubber gasket, be careful not to tear it by unscrewing it too fast. Once it is loosened, finish untightening the unit with your hand.

  4. Step 4

Pop off the Whirlaway garbage disposal from underneath the sink.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the dishwasher drain line at the garbage disposal. If there isn't a dishwasher, then no line needs to disconnected.

  6. Step 6

Unbolt the electrical outlet from the bottom of the Whirlaway garbage disposal. Use a wrench to unscrew the nut.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go easy when removing your garbage disposal to avoid damaging the drain pipes and the other mechanisms under the sink.
