1
Decide what type of business you want to start. Will you be in business by yourself or will you take a partner? Understand that whatever the business is, there may be fees that have to be paid and forms that must be filed in California.
-
2
Map out a business plan. This map will be your plan of action from the onset of the original idea to the start up of the business. Detail the plan as thoroughly as possible so that you will be prepared to write a business proposal from it.
-
3
Find the money you will need to build your business. You can find money through savings, people you know, banks, or investors who may be interested in your idea. Be prepared to present your business proposal as a means of gaining support..
-
4
Research what is legally required for a business to operate in California (see Resources below). Expect to obtain a permit or license and understand that taxes will have to be paid. The business will have to be registered.
-
5
Obtain counseling to assist in your success. The Small Business Development Centers offer counseling in all aspects of small businesses. The U.S. Small Business Administration is also available to help in all steps of your venture. Look for retired business people and/or volunteers (see Resources below) who are looking for people to mentor.
-
6
Hire someone to assist you after the business opens. Do know, though, that the California Employment Development Department has strict rules that must be followed, as does the California Division of Occupationala Safety and Health (OSHA).
