Things You'll Need:
- Fabric
- Sewing machine
- Needle
- Thread
-
Step 1
Choose your fabric and cut a piece that is at least 1.5 yards. You want a piece of fabric that will drop from your waist to your ankle or lower calf. Measure the fabric from your waist, and let it drop to your calf or below. Remember that you will be folding the top of the fabric over to secure the sarong. Give yourself plenty of length.
-
Step 2
Cut the same piece of fabric that will wrap around you at least 1.5 times. If you plan to wear the sarong as a cover-up, being able to wrap it 1.5 times is perfect, but you will want to be able to wrap the fabric around your body at least 2.5 times if you plan to wear the sarong by itself.
-
Step 3
Roll 1/2 inch hem along all the cut edges. Stitch the hem. You can use a sewing machine to stitch a straight hem, or you could sew the hem by hand. You could also choose to serge the edges.
-
Step 4
Wrap your sarong around your waist. Fold it over the top to keep it secure. This may take a little practice. Give yourself time to get used to wrapping your sarong.
-
Step 5
Wrap your sarong tightly to your waist. Fold the top of the fabric over 3 or 4 times from the waist. The fold should be at least 2 inches, but a deeper fold will make it more secure.
