Adult acne affects women in their mid twenties to late forties. The cause is mysterious and varied, yet research points to a culprit named sebum, an oily substance manufactured in the sebaceous glands. A hyperactivity of sebum clogs pores, which leads to pimples. The hyperactivity can be caused by hormonal imbalances and diet. After much trial and error here are some of the ways that I found to get adult acne under control.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Doctor
  • A Dermatologist
  • An Esthetician
  • A credit card or cash
  1. Step 1

Hormonal balance therapy: The male hormone called androgen is also present in women's bodies. Androgen is converted into estrogen in the female system. When our hormones go haywire during menstrual cycle, pregnancy or stress it is due to the over production of this hormone. Some birth control pills like Yaz can combat this by leveling the production of estrogen and blocking androgen. Most women notice a definite improvement with acne when using androgen free birth control pills.

  2. Step 2

Eliminating dairy: Milk the foundation of most dairy products can lead to acne. If your diet is rich in dairy items like milk, yogurt or cheese you may experience acne flare-ups. The hormone present in lactating cows is androgen which research has proven to cause sebaceous gland activity. Additional hormones IGF-1 are also given to cows to stimulate milk production, these are the same hormones found in adolescents. The human stage when acne is most prevalent. 3. Step 3

Quit smoking: The comedo that manifests on the face and back may be due to the toxins in cigarettes. Based on my personal experience, when I cut back on smoking my face and chest broke out less. The farther away I got from cigarettes, the clearer my skin became.

  4. Step 4

Microdermabrasion: This is a skin resurfacing procedure used to regenerate and revitalize the skin. The procedure peels away the outer most layer of compiled infested dead skin cells, revealing the glowing one beneath. Most women see obvious results within 2 visits. Much smoother skin, lack of blemishes and a vast reduction in acne scars can be seen in 6 visits, for some people it may take more. At home microdermabrasion kits like Neutrogena’s Rejuvenator and Susan Lucci's Youthful Essence are available for a fraction of a spa or office visit cost.

  5. Step 5

Topical care: Controlling the acne with creams and ointments from the outside as well is the most effective combination. A lot of the over the counter medication is geared towards younger skin that as a preponderance of oil glands, compared to older skin that has less. The OTC products may take care of the acne but might rid your skin of essential oils and moisture, hence the flaking and dry patches. Using natural products that addresses the acne but leaves the skin smooth and supple is the best bet. Products with tea tree oil in them like Ain’t misbehaving from DERMAdotor and tea tree oil facial collection from the Body Shop works very well. A total miracle that I have found is Umbrian clay bar from C.O Bigelow, it works wonders. A product with plenty of Alpha Hydroxy for example Oil of Olay and Lancôme does great; especially on dark skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you and your doctor decide on the best birth control for you log on the product website they usually have a discount coupon.
  • Replace dairy with soy products if you're not allergic and consume products with added calcium and fortified minerals.
  • At home microdermabrasion kits I discovered are not as powerful as the professional ones. I mostly use mine for maintenance between every other month office visit.
  • Make sure you find a qualified Esthetician by asking for references and calling the better business bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
  • It is costly in the beginning.
