How to Stop Biting The Skin Around Your Fingernails

Follow the steps on this guide if you'd like to stop biting the skin around your fingernails.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

As with quitting any habit, you should try to shoot for 21 days. After 21 days, the subconcious starts to forget about the habit and what actually made you feel like doing it. If you can make it 21 days, you have an enormously greater chance of quitting any habit.

  2. Step 2

A method I've seen is placing pieces of tape on the tips of the fingers so the nails and skin around them are covered. This will allow them to heal while you learn not to bite them. People who are trying to stop biting their nails can also try this method.

  3. Step 3

Rub some vaseline or petroleum jelly over your nails and the associated skin surrounding them. This will make them taste very bad and after a few days, you should learn pretty quick not to bit them. The other good thing about petroleum jelly is that it will lock in moisture and help them heal faster.

on 5/15/2009 I agree with the 21 days aspect. Aprox. 2 weeks it takes to kick a habit, or subconsciously put it out of mind.
