Piñatas are a lot of fun. Though they began as a Mexican tradition, everyone can enjoy them. A basic piñata is also surprisingly easy to make.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 balloons; one large and one small
  • newsprint
  • plaster or papier mache paste
  • gray tissue paper or crepe paper
  • construction paper
  • glue
  • string
  • scissors
  • pin
  1. Step 1

Blow up the balloons and rest them on something stable. An open Tupperware container works well.

  2. Step 2

Mix the plaster into a thick liquid paste. Tear the newsprint into strips. Dip each strip in the plaster and lay it over the balloon. Cover the balloon with several layers of newsprint, but leave the bottom untouched. Do the same thing to the other balloon. Let them dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Glue strips of gray tissue paper over the balloons. Make all of the strips go horizontally.

  4. Step 4

Make ears out of construction paper and glue them to the top of the smaller balloon. Make a cone out of gray paper, glue or tape it together, and attach it to the front of the rat's face. Let it dry completely. Cut eyes, a nose, and a mouth from construction paper and glue them in place. Glue the nose to the tip of the cone.

  5. Step 5

Cut out the rat's feet from construction paper and attach them to the larger balloon to make the rat's body.

  6. Step 6

Use a pin to pop each balloon. Carefully remove them from the newsprint shell through the bottom.

  7. Step 7

Thread a piece of string near the bottom of the rat's body to make a tail. Attach the head to the body.

  8. Step 8

Fill the rat's body with candy. Tilt the piñata so that all the candy collects on one side. Use the plaster and newsprint strips to cover over the hole (make lots of layers!) Let the newsprint dry completely and cover it with gray tissue paper.

  9. Step 9

Make two small holes that are very close together on the rat's back. Thread a piece of string through the holes and hang up the piñata.

  10. Step 10

    Let the fun begin!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use super glue to attach the rat's ears and feet as well as the head to the body.
  • This kind of piñata requires you to hit it with some kind of stick, so be careful. It would probably be best to use it outside.
