Emergency Kit

An emergency kit is a kit you can put together in the event of a real emergency in which you may need certain items. There are many different types of emergency kits you can make. This kit could be beneficial in any type of situation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic container or other means for storing/holding items
  • All the items listed to make up the kit
  1. Step 1

You will need something to put the emergency items in and properly store them. Buy a box or use something you already have like a large tin or pail. You can buy a large plastic bin with a cover at many places inexpensively. Wal-Mart carries many different shapes and sizes in plastic bins.

  2. Step 2

Purchase all the items you will need to put into the kit.
Here is a list of the items you will need:

Batteries, flash light, matches, candles, emergency crank or battery operated radio, whistle, local map, sewing kit(with needle and thread), rubbing alcohol, first aid kit(with alcohol swabs, band-aids, antibiotic ointment, burn cream, benadryl, advil or tylenol and aspirin, tweezers, scissors, any prescription medications that you may need to take, also may want to consider an emergency reference material like a first aid book), garbage bags (use to carry items, for trash, warmth, protection, shelter), warm blanket, bleach or water purification tablets, bottled water, cooking utensils, toilet paper, toothbrush and toothpaste, bar of soap, cold & warm weather clothing, knife/knives, food (canned food, freeze dried foods, granola/protein/fruit bars, nuts, peanut butter, dried fruit, crackers, powdered milk, canned juice, vitamins, dry cereal or granola, vitamins and food for a baby if you have one) and you may want to consider including a gun with ammunition for hunting/protection. Putting some extra cash into the kit may be a good idea too.

  3. Step 3

Remember to make your kit portable in case of a real emergency where you must move fast and evacuate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep old prescription glasses when you get new glasses. Place old glasses into emergency kit for safekeeping. An old pair of glasses is better than none at all.
  • Place anything else you think you or your family may not be able to do without.
  • Practice emergency drills with your family.
  • Bring only what you need.

on 6/25/2009 I would also add a product called "LifeCaps" to your emergency preparedness kit. They are a survival pill designed to sustain life in an emergency situation. You can find them at http://LifeCaps.net. I found that if you use coupon code GOCAPS at check out, you will save 33%.
