Step 1
Go easy on yourself by scheduling your open house in a 2-hour range, for example from 3 to 5 p.m. Then four or so families can naturally stagger themselves into different time slots and you may not have much overlap.
-
Step 2
Buy easy, ready-to-serve snacks and appetizers. No need to heat anything if you don't want to. Splurge on some nice wine. Set out glasses and dishes beforehand. Set up crackers and a few cheeses, attractively arranged.
-
Step 3
Purchase some cookies and set up hot chocolate in a thermos for the kids, so it stays hot for the duration of the open house. Prepare a table and chairs for them, if possible. In case kids get hungrier, have some ready-made popcorn available for a quick fix.
-
Step 4
Expect kids to hang out in your child's room. Have an assortment of toys neatly set out. Consider the other ages and genders of siblings who will attend.
-
Step 5
Socialize and take a break from the holiday madness with other parents. Go ahead and take photos of the kids, as they will probably be somewhat dressed up for the occasion.
