How to Buy Sarongs
A sarong is a traditional garment worn by men and women in various parts of Asia and in the Pacific Islands. The garment is usually tied around the waist and worn as a skirt. In western countries, such as the United States, the sarong is often worn as part of beach attire over a swimsuit. Sarongs can be fancy with decorative patterns or very casual. Due to their popularity all over the world, they can be easily purchased in various types of clothing stores, bazaars and online.

1
Decide where you will wear the sarong. For example, a traditional sarong that is worn to a religious occasion may be a different pattern and color than a sarong worn to the beach. A traditional sarong intended for more formal use is often longer than a sarong intended for casual use at the beach or pool.

2
Consider fabric. Sarongs are often made of cotton, silk or rayon. Some sarongs are a combination of both fabrics. The softness of the sarong may vary depending on what percentage is cotton. A lightweight material such as cotton may work best if you are using a sarong as a beach cover-up.

3
Choose a pattern. There are numerous patterns for sarongs. Floral pattern are very popular, especially for beachwear. Celtic designs and animal prints are also common. More complex and expensive sarongs with detailed, intricate patterns can also be purchased.

4
Pick length. Traditional sarongs worn by men in women in Asian countries are usually floor length. Sarongs sold in the United States are various lengths. Although floor lengths are sold, popular styles include knee length sarongs and those that fall above the knee.

5
Select the amount of coverage you want. Length is not the only factor when considering the amount of coverage you will have with a sarong. Some styles have a slit on the side, which reveal more of the leg. Other types wrap completely around the lower half of the body, without a slit, providing more coverage. Keep in mind some sarongs can also be tied just under the arms and worn as a dress.

6
Learn the different ways to secure a sarong. Some are meant to be tied, either on the side or in the front. Sarongs that are intended for more formal occasions may be secured with a belt or pinned.
-
7
Look at cost. The type of fabric, length and details all determine the cost. Sarongs that are handmade and have intricate details, such as beading, will cost more than a sarong made from a cheaper material with few details.
