The Weather Channel is predicting a very cold start to this week's weather; the news states that the latest winter storm is blanketing the Northwest, and one third of the country will "find itself in the grip of a wintery icy storm". If you have a pet, this should serve as a warning to you; dogs, cat and other pets should be protected during inclement weather. How can bad weather affect your cat and how should you protect it?

Things You'll Need:

  • Leave out enough fresh water and food
  • Leave a blanket ouside
  • Make a temporary enclosed area

Many of us get excited when the forecast calls for snow, but inclement weather calls for preparation and work. If you have a pet take the necessary steps to protect it. A cat for example, spends lots of time outside exploring the outdoors, this could prove challenging, because cats may refuse to stay indoors no matter what. Most Vets recommend keeping your pets inside when the mercury drops, but this may not always be possible.

  2. Step 2
    Consider an enclosure

    Consider an enclosure

If you have a cat that likes the outdoor, consider keeping it in the back yard or in an enclosed area. Some cats may climb under hoods of cars to warm themselves, this can prove to be dangerous, make it a point to check your car before driving away. To keep their pets safe, some people may put net surrounding overtop to keep their cats from climbing out. Keeping your cat safe is never easy during inclement weather, but remember that your cat's safety is your responsibility.

  3. Step 3
    Protect your cat

If you cat insist on being outside, clean off its legs, feet and stomach after coming in from the snow. Salt and other chemicals can make it sick if swallowed. Not all cats like cold days, and if they are like my cat, it's very likely they will stay indoors, anyway.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place a hot water bottle in a towel to keep pet warm
  • Provide a warm accessible shelter outside if needed
  • No pet should stay outside in bad weather for unlimited amount of time

on 12/22/2008 I had a cat that I had a towel for. When he came home wet and cold, he would stand there and let me dry him off!
