This was a fun and easy recipe for me to make. I made a video of this and it's included in the additional resources link section of this article-please go watch it, rate it and leave me a comment there on youtube! (thanks!) This year I am giving small samples of the homemade apple butter to my clients for a appreciation gift. I am putting them in small containers and then placing them in a holiday gift 'loot' bag. I love apple butter myself on an english muffin and to be really decadent I also used some cream cheese on the muffin as well. Apple Butter can be used with peanut butter on a sandwich. A dollop of apple butter goes well with pork loin or chops. Swirled into some cottage cheese is a yummy dessert too! Put some on your oatmeal, pour it over warmed pecans, replace some of the oil in a carrot cake to reduce the fat content...the list goes on and on. Be creative or just grab a muffin and enjoy!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crock Pot
  • 12 Granny Smith Apples
  • Cider Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Red Hot Candies
  • Mixer or food processor
  • Containers for storage
  1. Step 1

Peel and core 12 Granny Smith Apples

  2. Step 2

Dice apples and place in crock pot

  3. Step 3

    Add 2 tsps cider vinegar

  4. Step 4

    Add 3 cups Sugar

  5. Step 5

Add 5 to 7 oz red hot candy

  6. Step 6

Let simmer on high, stirring frequently for 4-5 hours. Using a mixer or masher occasionally will help speed the process along and smooth out the chunks.

  7. Step 7

Immediately pour into your storage containers. This will begin to solidify fairly quickly. Let cool on the counter, cover and refrigerate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Yields approx 42 oz per 12 large granny apples
  • Stir frequently
  • If you choose to do this on your stovetop, stirring frequently will prevent burning.
  • If you prefer it to be chunkier, use the mixer less. Or let it cook on low longer rather than using a mixer at all.
  • This gets very hot, children should be supervised!
