Using three shades of eye shadow on the eyes can emphasize eye color and create an elegant or dramatic look. When applying three shades of eye shadow, it is important to apply the lightest shade first and the darkest shade last. Mistakes along the way can be corrected using a damp washcloth. Knowing how to apply three shades of eye shadow correctly can draw attention to your eyes and create a beautiful effect for day or night, while incorrect application will look unnatural and draw attention away from your eyes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid foundation
  • Foundation sponge
  • Eye shadow brush
  • Powder eye shadow in three shades
  • Washcloth
  1. Step 1

Select three eye shadow shades in the same color family. Make certain the colors look natural with your skin tone. The darker or more vibrant the colors, the more dramatic the end result will look.

  2. Step 2

Apply liquid foundation to the eyelids using a small foundation sponge or your fingertip. The foundation should be suitable for your skin type and skin color, and will help hold the eye shadow in place while allowing the colors to remain true.

  3. Step 3

Place the eye shadow brush gently into the palest shade of eye shadow. Move the brush gently to pick up only a small amount of color. Any excess color should be removed by tapping the brush before application.

  4. Step 4

Cover both eyelids with the palest shade from the middle of the eyelid up to the brow line. The color must be evenly distributed, and any smears or excess should be gently wiped away before proceeding to the second color.

  5. Step 5

Rub the eye shadow brush gently through the medium shade of color, and tap away any excess to prevent dust from settling on unwanted areas of your eyes or face. The medium shade should be applied over the eyelid, from the eyelash line through the crease line.

  6. Step 6

Add the darkest shade to the eye shadow brush and apply to the outer corners of both eyes, just above the lash line. This color can be extended out farther from the eye for a more dramatic look, and can also be used to line the lower lashes if desired.

  7. Step 7

Blend the three shades carefully, from the inner corner of the eye out. Using a damp washcloth, wipe away any eye shadow that has accumulated outside the eye area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pearly shades can be used to highlight the area just below the brow. This will make the eyes appear more open and less tired.
