Step 1
Take a Native American literature class. I've learned so much from Native Literature including the origins of traditions in Ojibwe culture. I've also learned that there are over 500 Native tribes in the U.S. alone. A lot of Native Literature is told from the perspective of Natives themselves and the struggles that they have had to go through in modern day times while also trying to preserve their culture and get past stereotypes.
-
Step 2
Search for Native American tribes in your local area. Many people would be surprised of how many Native tribes still exist in certain areas. You may be able to speak to locals and find out some history of the are from them.
-
Step 3
Learn Native American language. Learning Native Language is a great way of acting to preserve the language and to be able to communicate with Natives who primarily speak the language.
-
Step 4
Go to a powwow. Don't know where one is? Here is a website that lists many of them all around the U.S.: powwows.com.
-
Step 5
Attend a Native Feast. Back in November a Native Feast was held at my school in a kind of celebration and Thanksgiving in preparation for the cold winter ahead. If your lucky, you may be able to eat some frybread!
-
Step 6
Keep the culture, language and tradition alive! There are so many people who don't know anything about Native American culture, or they simply have the wrong idea about them. Some may think of them merely as savages who dress up in loincloths instead of regular modern clothing. Educate your self about what Native culture REALLY means and then, educate others.
