Just as dairy farming requires skills that are different from a hog farmer, an attorney who specializes in litigation over stray voltage and current on dairy farms has specific and unique skills. If there is a chance you may want to sue your electric company, talk to a lawyer sooner rather than later so that your trip through the court system is successful.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search dairy farming newspapers and magazines for articles in the archives about stray voltage litigation. Lawsuits that have been filed and resolved successfully, even if an out of court settlement, will include the names of the attorneys. Keep a record of the names, cities where the lawsuit occurred and whether or not they won.

  2. Step 2

The ideal lawyer will have experience with dealing with huge utility companies, an understanding of electricity and electric transmission in the US, as well as experience that includes understanding the operation of a dairy facility. He or she will also have expert witnesses to call on.

  3. Step 3

Before you meet with the attorney write down the history of electrical issues on your farm in a bullet point fashion. This will save you and the lawyer time (and money). If more info is needed you'll be asked questions. Don't forget to ask about the lawyer's experience, too.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask your stray voltage consultant who he recommends as an attorney. Consultants work with lawyers all the time and can give you names and numbers as well as practical advice.
  • Only hire an attorney who has experience with stray voltage lawsuits. The utility company will have several lawyers so you need to have a very experienced pro on your side.
