Swedish coffee was popular among the Swedish and Lutheran communities of upper Minnesota and other Swedish communities around the country. Many who attended social functions and after-service coffees in the Swedish Lutheran churches remember the smooth, rich flavor of the Swedish coffee. Here's a Swedish coffee recipe that will bring back fond memories.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of ground coffee
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 8 cups boiling water
  • wire strainer
  1. Step 1

Break the egg into a small bowl. Crush the egg shell and set aside for later.

  2. Step 2

Add ground coffee to egg and beat well.

  3. Step 3

Add cold water to coffee and egg mixture. Mix well, then add crushed eggshells and stir.

  4. Step 4

Pour coffee and egg mixture into boiling water and return to fire. Stir with metal spoon until foam subsides - about four minutes.

  5. Step 5

Remove coffee from stove, cover and set aside to settle for 7-10 minutes. The coffee grounds, eggshells and egg will settle to the bottom.

  6. Step 6

Strain coffee through wire strainer into coffee cups, or into a coffee pot for serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • If coffee grounds don't settle, add about 1/4 cup cold water to the pot. The cold water will sink to the bottom and take the coffee grounds with it.
  • Be sure to strain well. Eggshells in your coffee are no fun!
