Select a primer for your plaster walls. Pigmented shellac makes a good primer for plaster walls since it reduces possible moisture damage.

Repair any damages to the plaster wall with patching plaster or latex caulk. Dab the plaster onto larger holes and dab the caulk onto cracks in the plaster wall.

Paint over the repairs with another coat of pigmented shellac primer. Select a latex-based paint in any color you choose for the plaster walls. Flat paint shows fewer imperfections than glossy paint. Paint over the primer with a single coat of latex-based paint.
