Picking locks is actually quite simple once you learn a few basic skills. And you can make your own lock picks with a few basic household items such as Allen wrenches and safety pins.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a grinder or file to whittle an Allen wrench down to the right size to pick a lock. You can check to make sure you have the right size by inserting the wrench into your lock.

  2. Step 2

Use a screwdriver to pick a lock. Choose a very small screwdriver that is small enough that it doesn't touch either side of the lock walls.

  3. Step 3

Locate a plastic or metal paper clip and straighten it out completely. After the clip is completely straight, bend a small loop that is barely the right size to fit into the key lock.

  4. Step 4

Select a straight pin, and file down the point with a nail file. This will ensure you don't poke yourself while working on picking the lock. Use this filed down pin to pick a lock.

  5. Step 5

Select a steady metal safety pin. Use a nail file to smooth out the point. Like the straight pin, having a smooth point will prevent you from sticking yourself while working on picking a lock.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase a practice lock. The first step in making your own lock pick is purchasing a lock to practice with. Purchase a medium priced lock with a deadbolt.
  • When learning to pick a lock, try to turn the lock upside down. This will make it easier to pick the lock. Once you've achieved lock picking in the upside position, flip it over.
