Step 1
Take a look at your home. Are there items in the floor because there is nowhere else to put them. If so, chances are that you are a pack rat. Having so many items that you can't organize them all is a classic sign.
-
Step 2
Think about how long it takes you to find something. If you can't find the papers you need you want under the mountain of items in your home, or your closet is so full that it takes you forever to find the outfit you want, you are probably a pack rat.
-
Step 3
Look at your home through others' eyes. You might be used to the clutter, but what would someone else say? Take a look around your home and pretend that it's the first time you've ever seen it.
-
Step 4
Imagine getting rid of something. Does it make your heart race? Do you immediately think of a way to get out of it or an excuse to keep an item? If so, chances are that you're a pack rat.
-
Step 5
Ask a friend or relative that you trust whether they think you are a pack rat. When you have a problem, sometimes others are the first ones to see it. You might be blinding yourself to the reality that you have a real problem with throwing anything away.

on 12/27/2008 You wrote this one for me, didn't you? I'll admit to being a packrat...a scrounger....I even keep the lint from my dryer. I stuff it in the toes of my boots to make them comfy and warm. I'm harmless, tho. Now where did I put those devils food cookies....hymm
