Things You'll Need:
- Basic knowledge of digital cameras.
-
Step 1
Find a camera dealer with a good reputation. You do not want to go to a store where the main goal is a sale.
-
Step 2
Find a reputable camera dealer will help you find the camera that is right for you before trying to make the sale. This will avoid confusion about the products.
-
Step 3
Firstly, stay realistic about what you will use the camera for. Are you just planning on taking pictures of your family for memories or are you looking for bigger things by considering going into photography professionally?
-
Step 4
Determining what kind of photos your want to take will keep your choices divided. Average camera use (snapshots of family, vacations etc) will do fine with a point and shoot camera, while those looking to make photography a hobby or profession will benefit from a DSLR.
-
Step 5
The next thing to consider is the possibility of blowing up your images, that is important when choosing how many megapixels you will need. The higher the megapixels, the bigger you can blow up pictures for printing.
-
Step 6
Let the camera dealer know your plans up front and they will be able to point out what cameras would be best for your needs. Never let them try to talk you into a higher model you may not fully utilize. Keeping your camera's specs within range of your knowledge will help you make full use of it.

on 10/28/2009 Go online and ask questions to those who already own the cameras that are reccommended by the dealers. There are lots of digital camera centric web sites out there that offer free, unbiased reviews and commentary by owners.

on 12/20/2008 Excellent advice - I wish I could have "tested" my Nikon camera before purchasing.. The thing won't take clear pictures, not sure why.
I've tried fixing the settings, flash, even the motion capture settings. Everything just comes out really blurry :( GREAT article tho - I recommend you and give 5 stars!!
