Things You'll Need:
- Preparedness
- Confidence
-
Step 1
Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing. Ask what kind of party you will be attending and what the dress code is. This way you save yourself from embarrassment when you show up wearing a formal dress but everyone is wearing jeans and T-shirts. Once you have an idea, check your wardrobe and pick clothes you are going to wear for the party. Keep in mind the word “comfort”. Choose the most comfortable clothes you can wear. You don’t want to be self-conscious at the party when you continuously scratch yourself because the fabric is so itchy or you keep holding your breath because the clothes you are in is too tight.
-
Step 2
Show appreciation to the person who is the host/hostess of the party upon arriving at the venue. Bring a gift or token. It could be glass of wine, food you cooked, or any gift that you think is appropriate.
-
Step 3
If you come to the party with someone, keep that person close to you most of the time. It helps you feel at ease and gives you the confidence to stay till the party is over.
-
Step 4
Scan the room and find a friendly face. Approach the person and introduce yourself. Start conversations by concentrating on general topics. The person you talk to first may introduce you the some of his friends and so on and so forth. You will be surprised how many people you will meet!
-
Step 5
Break the ice. Talking to someone you meet for the first time can be uncomfortable especially if you are not used to it. But it is one way to make yourself visible during the party and make you less self-conscious. Tell jokes or share stories that may be of interest to others who are present.
-
Step 6
If you are a little nervous, get something to drink to calm your nerves. It doesn’t have to be alcohol drink. You can drink soda, water, milk, juice, or mixed drinks. Also, partake in the foods being offered to you and don’t forget to say thank you.
-
Step 7
Take part in joining games and activities during the party. This will make you feel more at home and comfortable with fellow partygoers. You will also have fun as you bond with new people you just meet.
-
Step 8
Bring a camera or video recorder with you. Take photos or record videos as keepsake of the party you just attended. You may or may not have another chance again to attend a party with the same set of people, but you can keep the memories with you.

on 1/9/2009 Great tips! I find myself in this situation a lot and I've learnred how to observe first and then try to join in conversations. Observing puts me at ease and makes it easier to get a feel for how people will receive me.
