Step 1
If you owe a tax debt to the IRS don't pay without first checking into their claim. Just becuase the IRS sends you a bill doesn't mean its correct figures. You should read the entire contents of the letter and do the math yourself. Gather all pertinent information you can find and do your research.
-
Step 2
Always keep records of important documents such as tax information for future reference. You should also always ask to have the penalties to be excused. It never hurts to ask. If you have unreported income you will more than likely get a letter, from the IRS, so don't try to hide our income in the future.
-
Step 3
If you can show reasonable reason why the penalties appeared on your bill you may get your tax debt excused. Yes, the IRS does grant tax relief occasionally. About half of the penalties Issued by the IRS are excused. To increase your chances of have the tax debt removed respond as promptly as you can. Try to respond within a week of receiving the letter. Try to make your letter short and to the point. Just be direct and try to entail your reply within 3 paragraphs.
