Step 1
Make an Item Checklist: Make a checklist of everything you normally stock in your food pantry. You can keep this posted somewhere in your pantry or create a checklist folder/binder. Review this checklist when making your meal plan and shopping list.
-
Step 2
Keep All Receipts and Enter Them Into a Spreadsheet: Use this spreadsheet to keep track of money spent, and price per item. It's also a great way to comparison shop between stores. It can also serve as a checklist when your are creating your shopping list and budget.
-
Step 3
Buy Store Brands: Brand names are often no better than the generics. This will be a matter of taste, but more often than not the only thing you'll notice is the price difference.
-
Step 4
Use the Leftovers: When making your meal plan, make room for a leftover night. You can also set aside left overs for lunch meals instead of eating out while at work. For times sake, pack your lunch after dinner and store it in the fridge.

on 12/23/2008 I like the spread sheet idea. I do tend to forget what I have already and buy another before I need to. It helps me to put leftovers in containers that can just be grabbed and taken to work instead of putting it in one big container. 5*
