Step 1
Pick out a time in the day when your child is the more alert. Have them sit at the table with you, or somewhere, where you are both at eye level. Talking to children in this way makes them feel safe ans secure. When your child is having to look up at you, it can be intimidating. Make sure the space you choose is away from any ears that aren't ready to hear the news.

Step 2
You may or may not want to tell your child the real reason behind Christmas. If you do however, this process will be much easier. You can start by explaining to them the mythology of Santa and why it has carried on for so many years. Explain to them that even though there isnt a Santa, the will continue to receive presents, and you will continue to read their wish list and monito their behaviour. Now, if you want to tell them about Christ, this would be the ideal time. Especially if your child is already aware of religion. Explain to them that the only thing that will change about christmas is that fact that he knows something the other kids dont, and therefore, having an advantage.

Step 3
If your child seems upset or distraught, at the lying that has taken place. Explain to them that this is a tradition that has taken place for many years. That learning the truth about Santa means that they are "growing up"". Also if you have younger children explain to them the secrecacy facter. Knowing that they have a "big secret", usually excites children, now keeping it is another story!
