Remove Ink Pen Marks From Leather Furniture

Leather furniture is beautiful and popular, until you find ink pen marks on it. Before you throw a quilt over it to hid the marks, try these tips to remove the ink.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • rubbing alcohol
  • high quality leather cleaner
  • soft white cotton cloth or cotton swabs
  1. Step 1

The most important thing you can do to insure that the ink is removed is to get to the pen mark quickly. The ink is, in essence, dying the leather and you must get it off as quickly as possible.

  2. Step 2

Household isopropyl rubbing alcohol can remove some ink stains. Damped a small white cotton cloth or cotton swab with alcohol.

  3. Step 3

Begin to rub the pen ink stain from the outside in. If the alcohol is working you should begin to see the ink transfer to the cloth. Keep moving to a clean area of the cloth to prevent redistributing the ink on the leather furniture.

  4. Step 4

If the rubbing alcohol does not work, try a commercial leather cleaner. You should follow the package directions for spot cleaning.

  5. Step 5

After the stain has been removed, or between treatments, allow to air dry.

  6. Step 6

It is a good idea to treat the leather furniture with leather conditioner to prevent it from being dried out from the alcohol used in the ink removal process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use hairspray. If the ink is dissolved by the hairspray it is likely to spread the ink stain out before you can wipe it off.

on 12/20/2008 Thank you for the tips. I waited to get leather items after the kids grew up, but in case there are any accidents, this is good to know.
