Restless leg syndrome is characterized by feelings of creeping, crawling or aching. Usually felt deep in the leg at night, and are painful only relieved by getting on your feet, or activity. It is associated with another disorder called periodic leg movements (PLM) which has leg jerking, and movements that disturb sleep. Some people that have Restless leg syndrome (RLS) also have PLM.

      Both disorders have an elevated exhaustion level during the day, because of limited sleep at night; sometimes leading to insomnia. It's sometimes considered a sleep disorder because of the fact of losing so much sleep because of it. There are also mood swings that are associated having more anxiety and depression. In children these pains are regarded as growing pains.

      John Hopkins University in 2003 published a study suggesting that restless leg syndrome was caused by an iron deficiency. There is still more research being done on this disorder. Other researchers suggest it may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It's also suggested it may be a genetic disorder and more testing is needed.

      There is no test for diagnoses; it's merely the symptoms described by patient. It is considered a neurological disorder and benzodiazepines, opioids and anticonvulsants are prescribed. Drugs with dopaminergic agents are prescribed examples are: Mirapex (pramipexole), Permax (pergolide) and Requip (ropinirole). Sinemet (carbidopa/levodopa), which is a drug that adds dopamine to the nervous system is also prescribed. Benadryl also aggravates restless leg, so it is best not to take this drug when experiencing symptoms of restless leg syndrom.

      Taking vitamins has proved to be effective. When the iron levels are below 50mcg/L, taking supplements of vitamin E, folic acid and B vitamins, and magnesium provide relief, and making dietary changes. People are becoming more aware of restless leg syndrome with more education and research being done. It is a disorder that any age can get. Getting proper evaluation and treatment is important.
